Walking and cycling routes in the nature reserve

The Drents-Friese Wold nature reserve covers 6,000 hectares and offers a special combination of forest, drifting sand, heathland, and brook-valley grasslands. This area is the second-largest contiguous forested region in the Netherlands. The focus of the development plan for this national park is to create space for “wild nature.” The trails are becoming more adventurous, as large parts of the area are no longer or only minimally managed. It is therefore possible to walk and cycle on paved, semi-paved, and sandy paths. How special is it that “De Kale Duinen” and the “Aekingerzand” can also be found in this forested area?

The Drents-Friese Wold offers 130 kilometres of walking trails, with more than 30 marked routes available. Prefer exploring by bike? The nature reserve features a network of cycling paths throughout the area. Perfect for spending a full day outdoors.

Spotting wildlife in the heathlands of Doldersummer- and Wapserveld

The heathlands of Doldersummer- and Wapserveld are located in the southwest of the Drents-Friese Wold nature reserve. Situated around the charming village of Doldersum, the vast moist heath is among the best developed in Western Europe. With a mix of dry sand ridges and wet depressions, you’ll find many different plant and animal species here. Heathland sheep and cattle keep the heath in good condition. The sheep graze under the guidance of a shepherd in this area. Thanks to the varied forestation, forest birds, meadow birds, and marsh birds live side by side. Of course, many other inhabitants can be found as well, including roe deer, foxes, hares, hedgehogs, squirrels, stoats, polecats, rabbits, and the very rare pine marten.

This beautiful area is easy to reach from Bungalowpark Het Bosmeer. From your holiday home, you can quickly get to the heathlands to spot animals, enjoy the beautiful nature, and follow a walking or cycling route.
