National Parks

In the area you will find three national parks. Each park is unique and perfect for beautiful walks or cycling trips!

National Park Drents-Friese Wold

On the border of southwestern Drenthe and southeastern Friesland lies one of the largest nature reserves in the Netherlands: the Drents-Friese Wold National Park. Enjoy more than 6,000 hectares of forest, heathland, drifting sand, and stream valley grasslands. Take a walk across the largest drifting sand area in the northern Netherlands: the Aekingerzand, popularly known as “the Bare Dunes.” Or take a refreshing dip in the nearby, beautiful Canadameer.

National Park Dwingelderveld

Visit the Dwingelderveld National Park in southwestern Drenthe, the largest contiguous wet heathland area in Western Europe. There are no fewer than two flocks of sheep with shepherds that help maintain the heathland. Enjoy heathlands, ponds, peat bogs, and rare plants and wildlife while walking or cycling. This park is also one of the most important habitats of the little owl, the smallest owl species in the Netherlands.

National Park Weerribben-Wieden

Visit the Weerribben-Wieden National Park in Overijssel, the largest contiguous lowland peat bog area in Northwestern Europe! A place to which residents and entrepreneurs have traditionally felt a strong connection. Enjoy canoeing, boating, hiking, or cycling in the habitat of the otter, stork, heron, and numerous butterflies and dragonflies. And of course, you can indulge in delicious regional cuisine at the many welcoming restaurants.
